Smithville resident Scott Roy, executive director of the Northland Regional Ambulance District, recently received a Missouri Municipal League Civic Leadership award. “They did a lot of different projects, and there were a lot great programs,” he said. The awards were given July 21 at a banquet in Blue Springs.  Smithville City Administrator Steve Garrett said Roy received the award for introducing Hands Only CPR to the community. “It’s extraordinarily important for public safety,” Garrett said. Roy introduced the program to the Smithville in early 2014. He had a goal of training 200 people in the community that year, with the support of St. Luke’s North Hospital-Smithville and the Smithville Area Chamber of Commerce. “I thought that may be a bit of a stretch based on past training I had done,” Roy said. It wasn’t. He went on to far surpass that 200 mark with close to 1,500 residents trained in Hands Only CPR in Smithville as of late last week. The technique focuses on chest compressions. The training takes place anywhere — from festivals to workplaces — with 20 minutes or less needed per person. More training is planned for the remainder of the year at sites around the community, including at Hot Summer Nights in August. “CPR is easier that it ever has been before,” Roy said.  NRAD’s executive director said the old training method took up to eight hours per person, was complicated for non-medical personnel, was costly and had to deal with the challenge of mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing. He next wants to focus on teaching people how to recognize cardiac events, which can often differ between men and women. For more information on Hands Only CPR or to set up a training time for a group of people, contact NRAD at 858-4450.
